Ahead of the Curve 2005 Workshop

Welcome Workshop participants. Help us determine which One Minute, Jrs. have the most potential to show "young people speaking out, taking a stand and making a difference."

You are NOT rating the best rough cut, but rather, the ones you think have the most potential to be the best (even if they need a lot of work). We've set up a rating system from 1 through 5: 1 = least potential, 5 = most potential.

In order for your vote to count, you must answer the following two questions in the 'comments' dialogue box: 1) Does this One Minute effectively address the theme of "young people taking a stand, speaking out and making a difference?" Why? Why not? 2) Can you easily see the 'dramatic arch' with a climax and resolution to the story?

Across the United States young people are using media production to speak out about their lives and communities. What are they saying? After Listen Up! called out to our national network to submit their best media produced over the last year, a talented and critical team of youth jurors viewed, rated and commented on nearly 50 submissions totalling over 3 hours of video. While the some videos were not selected for the final DVD Reel for a variety of reasons, they represent some of the best work in youth media today.

The DVD was sent out to organizations in the Listen Up! Network in the Fall of 2004.

Founded in 1984, EVC has evolved from a single video workshop for teens in Manhattan's Lower East Side into a nationally acclaimed leader in the fields of youth media and education.

San Diego Girls Film Festival 2005

The San Diego Girl Film Festival, hosted by the San Diego Women Film Foundation, partnered with Listen Up! to draw support for submissions to the youth media category of the festival on October 7-9, 2005 at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, California. The festival promotes women filmmakers of all ages, and empowers young women through the films' positive messages about specific social issues including ethnicity, class, culture, race and gender.

San Diego Women Film Festival 2006

The San Diego Women Film Foundation hosted the 4th annual San Diego Women Film Festival on October 5 to 8, 2006 at the Museum of Photographic Arts and The Natural History Museum in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. The Film Festival attracts women filmmakers of all ages from all over the world to submit to the festival and travel out to San Diego to experience the festival.

In 2006, the program OUR TAKE, a youth media program co-curated by Divas Direct and Listen Up!, attracted one of the larger audiences of the festival and featured a number of in-person youth filmmakers flown in from around the country. In addition to the festival screening slot, OUR TAKE also played for two large audiences of San Diego area school children, followed by a Question & Answer session with the in-person youth filmmakers, moderated by San Diego instructor/filmmaker Daria Matza.

We are pleased to provide here the national launch of the OUR TAKE program on ListenUp.org. Additional congratulations to the producers of The Youth Judges Award winner -- Vanessa Bateau for "Scrolii" -- and The Audience Award winner -- Kiri Davis for "A Girl Like Me."

The San Diego Women Film Foundation empowers young and grown women through positive media. The Film Foundation exposes the public to film and promotes women filmmakers' work through an annual film festival, the San Diego Women Film Festival, and year round Film Screening Program. By educating high school girls on the technical and creative skills of filmmaking through Divas Direct: Film Workshops for Girls, the Film Foundation helps create the next generation of young women filmmakers.

Spy Hop Productions Best of 2005-06

Spy Hop Productions is a Salt Lake City based non-profit youth media arts and education center, dedicated to empowering youth (k-12) through multimedia. Each September the organization produces a "Best Of" program, made up of the top short films produced by Spy Hop youth in the previous year. The filmmakers highlighted in this year's "Best Of" range in age from seven to nineteen, and selected films include documentary work, flash animation, fictional narratives, and claymation. Among others, works are included from Reel Stories 2006, a program co-produced by the Sundanc Institute and Spy Hop Productions; Write Shoot Ride, Spy Hop's longest running program; the 2006 LocoMotion International Film Festival; and University of Utah Youth Education Workshops.

The winner of this very competitive category will get an expense paid trip to Washington, DC for the National Black Programming Consortium "New Media Institute" in November.
